Kenya’s opposition coalition – NASA- on Sunday postponed plans to swear Raila Odinga as President and Kalonzo Musyoka as Deputy President.
In a short statement, Nasa Co-Principal Musalia Mudavadi said, “Following extensive internal consultations and engagement with a wide range of national and international interlocutors, the Nasa leadership wishes to advise the Nasa fraternity and the general public that the swearing-in of Raila and his deputy Kalonzo Musyoka as president and deputy president of the Republic of Kenya and the launch of the People’s Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, December 12, have been postponed to a later date.”
“We are aware that this will be a disappointment to the people of Kenya who were eagerly waiting for this occasion.Specifically, we wish to reiterate that any national dialogue must have electoral justice on the agenda. We are not interested in sharing illegitimate dictatorial power,” he added.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s adviser Salim Lone further added that “The postponement of the eagerly-awaited swearing-in of the winner of the 8th August election will come as a great disappointment to the vast majority of Kenyans. But with Mr Kalonzo Musyoka, who would have been sworn in as Deputy President, out of the country, and with his wiper Party asking that the swearing-in be delayed until his return, postponement was the only option that existed.”
“The swearing in of Mr Odinga as President and of Mr Kalonzo Musyoka as Deputy President would have been perfectly legal on Tuesday. And it will be perfectly legal when it does happen,” said Lone.
Last week, Attorney General Githu Muigai termed the planned inauguration of Raila as high treason that is punishable by death.
The National Super Alliance (NASA) has vehemently said they will not recognise Uhuru as president.
“We affirm that we do not recognise the Oct 26 election and to declare as per Article 1 of the Constitution we have not individually and collectively delegated our sovereignty to Uhuru Government,” said Musalia Mudavadi to the media on Saturday during a leadership forum held in Machakos County.
