The world’s last male northern white rhino, Sudan, died on Monday at the age of 45, completely wiping off the face of the earth of such a male species.

According to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sudan was being treated for age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds.

“We on Ol Pajeta are saddened by Sudan’s death. He was a great ambassador for his species and will be remembered for the work he did to raise awareness globally of the plight facing not only rhinos but also the many thousands of other species facing extinction,” said Ol Pajeta.

The death of Sudan has left behind two white female rhinos, the only ones in the world with scientists working around the clock, using Sudan’s DNA samples to produce another male.
