Gluttonous Kenyan MPs Now Want Taxpayer to Fund for their Food and Fine Wine

Kenyan Members of Parliament, apart from the many allowances they award themselves at the expense of the taxpayers, now want to channel more taxpayers money to their food and drinks.

The new regulation, the Public Finance (Parliamentary Catering Fund), signed by the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, will not only see the MPs eat good food and drinks but also use the funds to train parliament chefs to five-star statuses.

Moreover, some of the expensive foods and drinks they will be enjoying will be outsourced from the high-end hotels in the city.

The National Assembly clerk, Mr. Michael Sialai, will be responsible for allocating the funds any time the MPs need it.

The fund is only meant for purchasing the catering facilities, managing and administering, after which the catering fund may generate funds for itself.

“Although the regulations allow for the allocation of monies to the fund by Parliament, it will only be done when it is necessary. Otherwise, the fund will generate funds for itself,” he added.

Mr. Sialai says that the introduction of this new regulation was to see the Senate given an administrative role on the parliamentary catering facilities.

The parliament service commission already came up with a committee of eight persons =both from the National Assembly and the Senate, who will be tasked with managing the funds.

The new Public Finance Regulations 2019, comes after the Members of Parliament complained about the quality of food served at the parliament’s cafeteria.

In November last year, they expressed their wishes to have a well-renovated kitchen, members lounge, still room, restaurant, and bar, apart from having the parliament chefs and staff receiving better training and getting the attachment in five-star hotels.

They also wanted two more cafeterias on the ground floor of the red cross building and their toilets to be cleaned frequently.

Just a few days ago MPs were awarding themselves more allowances.

The bill has been approved and is waiting for the presidential signature before it officially becomes a law.
