5 Safety Precautions to Consider When Operating Cranes

BY Soko Directory Team · September 28, 2019 09:09 am

We all know how important cranes are for the construction and automobile industries. Without cranes, work would be almost impossible and more arduous than ever.

Cranes are complex machines equipped with cables and pulleys to help them move bulky goods from one place to another, especially moving goods from a lower level to a higher level. There are several different types of cranes such as mobile crane, tower crane, loader crane, overhead crane and more.

When utilizing cranes, it’s important to consider some safety precautions before and whilst operating cranes because crane accidents are very disastrous. Normally these accidents result in death, irrevocable injury and even property damage. Let’s look at the top 5 safety measures to consider when operating cranes.

1.      A Qualified Operator

When operating bulky, yet dangerous machines like cranes, you should always ensure that a competent professional is assigned the job. The person should have a good hands-on experience with managing cranes. The operant should ensure to follow manufacturer instructions when operating them. Moreover, workers should ensure that the load they are carrying is enough for the crane to carry; otherwise, serious damage can ensue.

2.      Pre-Operational Inspection

Have a qualified person inspect the machine, both physically and visually. This is to ensure that everything is in working order, and there is no damage done to the crane before operating it. It would be great if the inspector has a check-list made to ensure that all required parts of the crane are in working order so that nothing is left out during the inspection process. All equipment such as wires, hoists, and hooks should be in good condition. Hooks should always in the best condition possible because they will be carrying the load; you should look into crane hook Elebia to get the best hooks.

3.      Onsite Ground Conditions

This is very important. You should always ensure that the ground on which the crane will be operated is safe for it to be operated on. The crane should be situated on a firm and stable surface. Also, make sure that there is a sufficient amount of gas/oil to operate the crane; no one would like a crane to shut down in the middle of work.

4.      Warn Others

For the safety and awareness of others, always inform people when you are going to start the crane. When lifting, make sure that there is no one in the vicinity and never make the mistake of carrying a load over anyone. Another thing to consider for the safety of others is to avoid rushing; always take your time when lifting weights and place them securely where you wish to place them.  Furthermore, never leave a crane unattended when a load is suspended from it.

5.       Beware of Overhead Cables

With overhead cranes, this is something that needs to be looked after carefully. There’s a risk of a crane’s hoist line, or boom touching the energized power lines when moving materials. While those directly touching the crane are the most likely to be electrocuted, any workers in the proximity of the crane and electrical wires are at risk too. Therefore, always beware of wires when operating cranes because one or more people can be electrocuted in the event of an accident.
