10 Companies In Kenya That Have Fired Employees in 2019

BY Juma · October 24, 2019 07:10 am

In just three months, more than 4,000 people have lost jobs in Kenya. Within a period of three months, more than 10 companies have either closed down or fired employees to cut down on their expenditures.

Stats indicate that in the SME sector, more than a million jobs are getting lost annually in Kenya. This is based on the fact that at least 450,000 SMEs are closing down annually, 30,000 monthly and 1,000 daily. It is, therefore, a fact to say that at least 1,000 people are losing their jobs in Kenya daily.

The government continues to live in denial, saying that the economy is booming with stats by various governmental and non-governmental agencies indicating that the economy expanded by 6.3 percent in 2018. The reality on the ground is different.

The government shocked Kenyans when it said that it had created more than 800,000 jobs in 2018. It was, however, unable to sample out the said jobs. The truth is, there are no jobs. People are getting fired daily.

Just last week, 2,500 people lost their jobs when once Kenya’s giant gaming company, Betin, closed down 500 of their shops around the country. The closing shops of Betin came a few months after they had fired more than 500 people.

Jame Finlays, a flower company, has announced that on the 25th of December, it will be firing 1,100 of its employees as it closes down two of its largest flower farms. The East African Portland Cement went down on record for firing 100 percent of its employees at the time the construction sector was booming in Kenya.

Here are 10 companies that are either planning or have already fired employees:

  1. Finlays
  2. Betin
  3. SportPesa
  4. Air Afrik
  5. Telkom Kenya
  6. Stanbic Bank of Kenya
  7. East African Breweries Limited
  8. East African Portland Cement
  9. Ola Kenya
  10. Sanlam Kenya

The economy is on its knees. The retail sector is dying, the banking sector is letting people go, the agricultural sector has collapsed and only those in power are the ones enjoying.
