The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will spend 1.2 billion shillings in recruiting 10,000 interns and another 2 billion shillings in hiring at least 5,000 teachers in the next financial year in an effort by the employer to address teachers shortage in schools countrywide.

The 2 billion shillings is i alignment with the government’s dedication to ensuring a 100 percent transition from primary schools to secondary.

While addressing legislatures, the Chief Executive Officer TSC Nancy Macharia presented the budget needs of the teachers employer fo the financial year 2020-21 saying TSC intended to spend 1 billion shillings in training on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

TSC has been allocated by the national treasury 264.9 billion shillings which are expected to cover 262 billion shillings for salaries and 1.5 billion shillings for supplies.

TSC will also get 337 million shillings for the acquisition of non-financial assets and 600 million shillings for the Secondary School Quality Improvement Project.

TSC’s Nancy Macharia told the legislatures that in the current financial year the body had recruited 4,000 teachers and redeployed 1,000 teachers from primary schools.

“The 1,000 have been replaced in the affected primary schools while 6, 000 interns have reported to their work stations,” Nancy Macharia said also arguing a shortage in finances had initially become an obstacle in employing more teachers.

Kenya currently has 48,173 teachers registered with the TSC which is just 18.6 percent of the national requirement and hence a very small fraction of what is recommended.

Kakamega county is worst hit with the number of teachers at only 3,544 while Kerugoya has most teachers as a county in Kenya according to data presented to the Education committee chaired by Tinderet MP Julius Melly.

Marginalized counties are worst-hit with TSC CEO Nancy Macharia arguing that the shortage of teachers will most likely be there for long as the 3.2 billion shillings allocated still remained far short of the requirement.

“The funds are estimated to employ 5,000 new teachers for seven months and 10,000 interns for nine months,” TSC’s Nancy Macharia said.
