What is the Boxing Day?

What does it mean? Does it have anything to do with fighting?

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Boxing Day was the day the rich boxed up their gifts to give to the poor.

It is the 26th of December, 2021. A day after Christmas. After one of the most challenging Christmas, in the middle of a sweeping pandemic, it is time to reflect.

Now, why do we call it a Boxing Day? Many people think it is a day to box each other. In fact, in some parts of Kenya, people organized a wrestling match to celebrate this day.

But the truth is, a boxing day has nothing to do with wrestling. It was a day set aside for people to unwrap the gifts they had received during the Christmas Day.

History indicates that Boxing Day was a day when the rich used to box up gifts and give to the poor. It was also meant to be a resting day for civil servants.

Since it is an international day, it is celebrated all over the world. This year’s Boxing Day falls on a Sunday. The Government of Kenya has declared Monday a public holiday.

Simply, don’t fight. But do one good did go the less fortunate. Happy holidays.
