Kibo Scales Up Sustainability Efforts With 100,000 Trees Target

Kibo Africa, a leading local motorcycle manufacturer, is accelerating its commitment to a more sustainable future by embarking on an ambitious tree-planting initiative to plant over 100,000 trees in the next three years.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, through the State Department of Forestry and the Kenya Forest Service, Kibo has planted 10,000 tree seedlings at Kereita Forest as part of the wider commitment.
Kibo is investing in the re-forestation of Kenyan landscapes as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, aligning their corporate vision with the government’s initiative to increase the country’s forest cover by 15 billion more trees by 2032. The tree planting initiative will span multiple locations, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s ecosystem.

While speaking during the tree planting exercise, Huib van de Grijspaarde, CEO of Kibo Africa, said: “At Kibo, we have always been driven by innovation and a desire to create a better future, which is reflected in our manufacturing process, where we work to reduce our carbon footprint by sourcing a large component of our production materials locally rather than importing them, thereby reducing the carbon emissions associated with shipping.” We also ensure that our suppliers commit to and maintain environmentally friendly processes during production. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we will plant 100,000 tree seedlings over the next three years and care for them until they reach maturity. We believe that planting trees is an investment not only in our planet but also in the future of our communities, nation, and world.”
The ongoing national tree planting initiative aims to restore 5.1 million hectares of forest cover, highlighting the Kenyan government’s determination to address deforestation and promote sustainable practices. Kenya has committed to the African Union’s African Forest Landscapes Restoration Initiative (AFR100), which seeks to restore 100 million hectares of forest across the African continent.
Kenya currently has a forest cover of 8.83% with several projects, including public-private partnerships, to reach the ambitious target.
Speaking at the same event, Thomas Kiptoo, County Forest Conservator, Kiambu County, welcomed the partnership with Kibo terming it a monumental step towards a greener, more sustainable Kenya. “We are delighted to join hands with Kibo in this commendable effort to combat deforestation and promote sustainable practices. Trees are vital in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring a healthier environment for all. This partnership exemplifies how public and private sectors can collaborate to make a positive difference.”
This tree-planting initiative represents a continuation of Kibo’s broader environmental sustainability efforts. The company has previously provided logistical support to conservancies, enabling rangers to have better mobility to prevent poaching and encroachment.
