The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is dedicated to advancing environmental conservation and community empowerment in the Coast region by engaging in tree planting and safeguarding mangrove forests.

To address the imminent threat of degradation and deforestation faced by mangrove forests in various localities, the organization has proactively identified areas in need. The KRA is actively involved in uplifting surrounding communities by sourcing and purchasing seedlings, as well as raising awareness about the importance of conservation.

During a tree planting exercise in Dongo Kundu, led by KRA staff from the Southern region, Lawrence Siele, the Southern Region Coordinator, expressed the Authority’s commitment to aligning with the government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees within a decade. Siele reported that KRA is making significant progress in terms of the targeted number of trees planted and the identification of areas for afforestation and rehabilitation.

Siele emphasized that the local community takes the lead in these conservation efforts, with KRA acting as a facilitator. Through partnerships with the community and the Kenya Forest Service, KRA ensures that the inhabitants are actively involved in sourcing and purchasing trees.

On the recent National Tree Planting Day, KRA planted 10,000 trees as the first phase of their goal to plant a total of 34,000 trees in the coastal region.

Commending KRA’s efforts to boost revenue collection in the Southern region, Siele attributed its success to factors such as the digitization of revenue collection mechanisms. This digital transformation has effectively closed loopholes associated with manual transactions. Additionally, the introduction of revenue service assistants, who centralize revenue mobilization, has contributed to this positive trend.

Looking ahead, Siele highlighted the Southern Region’s ambitious revenue target of Sh642 billion, with customs accounting for Sh618 billion and Sh24 billion generated through domestic taxes. The Southern region aims to further improve service delivery and expedite revenue collection by incorporating over 100 revenue service assistants into their operations.
