How to Check If Your Number Plate Or Driving License Is Ready On NTSA Portal

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a directive to motorists across the country, urging them to collect their processed number plates from their respective application centers.
NTSA announced on Thursday, May 8, as part of the Authority’s ongoing effort to streamline the vehicle registration process and reduce congestion at its offices.
While the move is aimed at improving service delivery and ensuring that motorists receive their credentials promptly, several applicants have raised concerns about difficulties encountered when attempting to confirm the status of their number plates or determine the designated collection points.
Many motorists noted challenges such as lack of clear communication, delays in notifications, or being unaware of the proper procedures to follow.
To address these concerns, NTSA clarified that it typically notifies applicants via brief text messages when their documents are ready for collection. These messages include crucial details such as the collection centre and pickup date. However, some motorists have reported not receiving these alerts, leaving them uncertain about the status of their applications.

According to NTSA, there are several potential reasons why a motorist might not receive a notification. These include incomplete applications, unpaid statutory fees, or errors in personal details submitted during the application process.
In some instances, applicants may have entered incorrect phone numbers or failed to update their contact information, making it difficult for NTSA to reach them.
To prevent such occurrences, the Authority strongly recommends that all applicants take a proactive approach by frequently checking the status of their number plates and smart driving licenses. NTSA has recently introduced a digital solution that allows motorists to independently track the progress of their applications through its official website.
How to Check the Status of Number Plates and Driving Licenses Online
Motorists seeking to verify the status of their number plates or smart driving licenses can do so by visiting the official NTSA website at www.ntsa.go.ke. The site features an easy-to-navigate interface designed to provide real-time updates to applicants.
Once on the homepage, users are required to navigate to the “Online Services” section. Clicking on this section reveals a drop-down menu with two categories: NTSA Services and Other Services.
Under the “Other Services” menu, users should select the tab titled “Uncollected Smart DLs and Number Plates.” This tab provides access to a menu labeled “Selection Option,” where applicants can choose to search for either a driving license or a number plate.
To check the status of a smart driving license, applicants need only to input their national identification number (ID number). For those checking on the status of number plates, the system requires the vehicle’s registration number—a unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to each vehicle upon registration.
This online system is designed to improve transparency and empower users to monitor the processing of their documents without the need for repeated visits to NTSA offices.
While checking their application status, some users may come across the term “Archived” about their smart driving license. NTSA has explained that this designation typically indicates that the licence has either been suspended or the holder has been removed from the Authority’s active database.
Licenses may be suspended for several reasons, including traffic-related convictions or violations that render a driver ineligible to continue holding a valid license. In such cases, NTSA will not proceed with the renewal or reissuance of the document until the underlying issues are resolved.
This measure is intended to promote road safety and ensure that only qualified, law-abiding individuals are allowed to operate motor vehicles.
NTSA continues to urge all motorists to take responsibility for tracking the status of their applications and collecting their documents promptly. With the introduction of its online portal, the Authority aims to reduce waiting times and improve public satisfaction with its services.
The agency also emphasizes the importance of providing accurate information during the application process to avoid delays. By staying informed and utilizing digital tools, motorists can help NTSA achieve its mission of promoting road safety and efficient transport regulation across Kenya.
