Kenya Met Warns Of Rain, Extreme Cold Morning And Strong Winds In The Following Regions

According to Kenya Met, Kenyans residing in several parts of the country have been advised to prepare for a mix of weather conditions this week, ranging from extremely cold temperatures in the central highlands to soaring heat in the north-eastern region.

According to the latest seven-day forecast released by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday, June 24, a notable drop in temperatures and rainfall activity is expected in multiple regions, with varying intensities and durations.

Residents in ten counties, Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, have been urged to brace for biting cold conditions, especially during the night and early morning hours. The weather agency indicated that minimum temperatures in these counties could fall to as low as 6 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs peaking at around 26 degrees Celsius.

The early part of the week, specifically Tuesday and Wednesday, will feature sunny intervals interspersed with isolated showers, particularly in the afternoon. However, from Thursday through Saturday, residents should expect increased rainfall activity, with showers likely in the morning and afternoon hours.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised residents, especially those in rural and high-altitude zones, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the cold, particularly the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Beyond the central region, several counties in western and Rift Valley Kenya are also forecast to receive rainfall later in the week. These areas include:

1. Western Kenya: Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia
2. Nyanza Region: Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira
3. Rift Valley: Nakuru, Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Baringo

While morning hours will generally be marked by sunny intervals, showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures in these areas will fluctuate between 9°C and 28°C, depending on altitude and time of day.

The department has highlighted that this rainfall will contribute to the ongoing agricultural activities but has also cautioned farmers and motorists to remain alert for slippery roads and localized flooding.

In stark contrast, the north-eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to continue experiencing hot and dry conditions for most of the week. These regions will see persistent sunny intervals, with a slim possibility of brief afternoon showers on Wednesday.

Daytime temperatures in the north-east will soar to highs of 37 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures will drop to about 15 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has urged residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Counties in the south-eastern lowlands—including Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland areas of Tana River County—can expect cloudy mornings that gradually give way to sunny conditions in the afternoon throughout the week.

Despite the generally mild weather, occasional drizzles may occur in some areas. The forecast places temperatures in these counties between 11°C and 31°C, making them some of the more temperate zones this week.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s coastal belt, comprising Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and the coastal stretches of Tana River, will see a shift in weather patterns starting midweek. The week will begin with sunny intervals on Tuesday morning, but showers are expected in both morning and afternoon hours from Wednesday through the weekend.

These areas will experience relatively high humidity, with maximum daytime temperatures reaching 31°C and minimums around 22°C. The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised coastal residents, especially fishermen and beach operators, to remain updated on daily forecasts due to the unpredictable nature of coastal weather.

The Meteorological Department has continued to emphasize the importance of staying informed and planning daily activities accordingly. Kenyans are encouraged to dress appropriately for the cold in highland regions, stay hydrated in hotter areas, and be cautious during heavy rains, particularly in flood-prone zones.

Farmers, motorists, students, and those working outdoors are advised to follow regional updates closely to minimize weather-related disruptions. The department noted that it will continue to issue timely updates should there be any significant changes in the current forecast.
