Austrian Base Resources Limited has yet again discovered more mineral sands in Kwale after carrying out further exploratory drilling in the area.

In a statement, the mining company disclosed that it had also discovered new mineral deposits at Mafisini area, south east of the existing mineral sand mines adding that the “strong” drilling results clearly demonstrated the potential to grow resources and life of the Kwale mine, which has a projected lifespan of 13 years from October 2013.

“As previously announced, the company commenced an aircore drilling programme in the December 2016 quarter, within its special prospecting License 173…additional mineralization was discovered, extending the footprint of the Kwale South dune deposit to the South by 950 metres and east by up to a further 500 metres,” said the statement.

“The drill programme aims to provide mine life extension to the Kwale operations by exploring two previously identified prospective areas adjoining or near the existing Kwale operation ore bodies – the south-west sector and north east sector.”

In January, the company recorded a 30 percent jump in total ore mining in the last quarter of 2016 to three million tonnes, a new quarterly high attributing this to the recent commissioning of an additional 400 tonnes-per-hour hydraulic mining unit.

Base managing director Tim Carstens disclosed that they are expecting to boost its operations further this year, with more prospecting activities expected in the second phase of the Kwale project and a greenfield operation in northern Tanzania. The firm was granted the additional exploratory license last June by the Ministry of Mining, covering an expanded area of 177 square kilometers in Kwale County.
