A new Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) study released Monday on employee-employer relationships, finding that 80 percent of the employed job seekers intend to leave their job within the next one year.

The findings attribute this to the quest for better pay, career progression, job security and work environment.

Employee Intentions to Leave Current job

The report done in collaboration with Brighter Monday found out that 5 percent are not considering to leave their jobs. They cite a positive salary review recently or having been promoted whilst others indicate their benefits improved.

“More than half of employees who are seeking greener pastures earn an average of Sh52,911 per month,” according to Brighter Monday.

The ‘Job Market Survey’ was conducted between 12th and 18th September 2017 targeting Kenyan Job seekers only. A total sample of 1,078 Job Seekers who fall Into 3 categories: Employed but searching (n=441);  Unemployed but searching (n=569) and Self-employed but searching (n=68).

In the report, an engaged employee is one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and so takes positive action to further the organization’s reputation and interests. The findings show that the overall engagement score is 27 percent.

“A fully engaged employee should be engrossed and passionate about their work and as a result takes action to further the organisation reputation and performance.

However, the Job Market Survey shows that employed job seekers have low engagement levels of 27 percent and this is an indication that they are seated at their workstations but not contributing optimally to the success of the organisation. Instead, they are spending their time looking out for new job opportunities,” said Maggie Ireri, Chief Executive, TIFA Research.

Low Employee engagement
