NEMA Distances Itself from Ongoing City Demolitions

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has refuted claims that it is responsible for the ongoing demolitions in Nairobi.

NEMA which had been largely reported to be behind the demolitions in Nairobi County told the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources that the Nairobi Regeneration Project was behind the demolitions.

NEMA’s Director of Compliance, Zephaniah Ouma told the committee that its management was not involved in the exercise and even went further to absorb Water Resources Authority (WRA)of any blame.

“It should also be noted that whatever is going on is not NEMA and is not WRA, it is the Nairobi Regeneration. And of course the technical department NEMA is giving is very key and where there is no contravention chair, there are no grounds for the demolitions to be done,” said Mr. Ouma.

Buildings marked for demolition have been said to be on the riparian land, 50 meters away from the river, and are property to powerful individuals in the country.

The operation that began with Kileleshwa’s Java and shell fuel station on Monday, has seen two malls, Southend Mall and Ukay mall, already flattened with fears of more high-end structures set for demolition.

Friday’s demolition of Ukay Mall, however, almost turned tragic after one of the walls being torn down fell on the excavator slightly injuring one of the officials as the mall’s owner, Atul Shah watched helplessly after the High Court on Thursday declined to issue orders to stop the Government from tearing down the mall in Westlands.
