Paying Interns Soon to be Mandatory if Proposed Bill is Passed into Law

Interns, both private and public sector, could soon be paid if a bill drafted by Samburu West Member of Parliament Naisula Lesuuda is passed into law.

The drafted bill seeks to provide a monthly allowance that has previously not been mandatory leading to exploitation of graduates.

The bill which was submitted to Parliament on Tuesday reflects article 55 according to the constitution. The bill indicates that the state shall take action to ensure the youth have access to relevant education, training and finally employment.

Lesuuda has noted that the bill targets to address key challenges hindering the youth from engaging in any gainful opportunities and requires employers to set aside an amount of money to cover basic needs for the interns.

Lesuuda’s move comes at a time when efforts to reduce unemployment seem to have stalled increasing frustrations which are seen to lead to increase in crime and suicide cases.

Whether interns should be paid or not has been hotly contested, on social media, where majority support the idea given the current cost of living.

The Jubilee Government in its manifesto promised to create jobs especially among the youth which is yet to be fully achieved with results of the frustrations witnessed in the increased number of suicide cases across the country.

Kenya’s unemployment rate currently stands at 43.5 percent according to an official from the National Employment Authority (NEA), statistics that contradict all that is provided in the public domain.

For the longest time in Kenya, it’s been hard to define levels of unemployment as feelings that the numbers could actually be worse are floated around.

Kenya’s unemployment rate stands ahead of Tanzania’s and Ethiopia largely despite the country’s cost of living being higher than the two countries.
