KEY POINTS

There is an urgent need for the local authorities such as chiefs and their assistants to change how they are handling such reports.

The family of a 13-year-old girl in Elgeyo Marakwet County is demanding justice for their daughter who was raped and impregnated by a neighbor.

The rape victim was a standard seven pupil at Kimoloi Primary School in Kapkosom Sub-Location, Kocholwo Constituency.

According to the family, the young girl, who now has a 2-month-old baby, was raped and impregnated by a known neighbor who remains free.

The case was reported to the village elder, one Mr. William Chebos, who referred it to Samwel Barchilei, the area assistant chief as well as the area chief but no action has been taken.

Worryingly, the subject and the family are living in fear after being threatened by the suspect.

They are calling on the government to take action and the relevant authorities to ensure that their justice demands are met.

The family’s cries project a worrying trend sweeping across the country where defilement remains under-reported regardless of the drastic consequences the rape victims face.

There are lots of daily reports of minors who have been defiled and the situation ‘handled at home’ instead of being reported to the relevant authorities.

The victims are left feeling helpless particularly when no legal action is taken and reports to local authorities are brushed aside by terming such barbaric acts as domestic affairs which should be handled at home.

There is an urgent need for the local authorities such as chiefs and their assistants to change how they are handling such reports.

They should ensure that they gather much-needed evidence and take serious actions by implementing actions stated by the Sexual Offenses Act 2006.

It is also equally important for parents and guardians to be fully responsible for their children, especially teen girls, by being on guard for any sexual abuse and report these cases to the proper authorities without fear.

The government and the child rights organizations also need to pull up their socks and remain ever vigilant and unforgiving in addressing such issues. Otherwise, the unreported and ignored cases, the delayed and denied justice will continue risking the lives of young girls by exposing them to sexually transmitted infections and unintended teen pregnancies.
