TSC Favored Delocalized, Skilled Teachers And Couples In New CBA

KEY POINTS
Under the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA TSC will transfer couples to schools near each other if both are teachers subject to the availability of vacancies
Teacher Service Commission TSC and Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, finally reached a deal in just-concluded talk.
According to a statement released on 13th July, the KNUT secretary General Collins Oyuu said that they had signed a non-monetary agreement with a basic pay review expected in years’ time.
The agreement will serve this July to July 2026. This is a compromise to the hardstand the union had taken in the initial negotiations that they would take nothing short of the pay rise. Maternity extension was among the gains doubted in a new deal.
“We are happy to announce that all parties have reached a deal. We have signed a new CBA 2021-2025 but there is a room for strengthening in the future,” TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia said.
“I would like to tell our teachers that hope is still there. We have room to sit with TSC in a review process. Apart from the monetary change gains that are not perceived to be there, we have quantified quite a several gains with TSC in the said CBA” Collins Oyuu said.
He added that it is known to them as it is known to everyone that they must review this basic factor on the salary increment.
Under the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA TSC will transfer couples to schools near each other if both are teachers subject to the availability of vacancies. Delocalized teachers who suffered from long-distance relationships will now find peace.
Teachers in hardship will now enjoy an enhanced pack after TSC agreed to pay hardship allowances will be paid across all job grades.
In the new agreement, 15,000 KNUT members will get a pay raise from the 54 billion shillings pay package where they missed the third and fourth phases of the 2017-2021 CBA starting August 2021.
Teachers will also have 45 days for those who want to adopt a child and while teachers in arid and semi-arid land will have their allowances review upwards.
TSC and teachers’ unions also agreed to launch Career Progressive training for teachers to enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills. The training will also be used for promoting teachers to various grades.
The event, which was held at Safari Park Hotel, included attendees Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET and Union of Special Needs Education Teachers, KUSNET.
TSC officials who attended the event had earlier confirmed that they expected that the commission would sign the CBA with the Unions before the end of the day.
This comes after years of stalemate between KNUT and the Commission over lack of pay rise for some of the long-serving teachers among a myriad of financial challenges.
