246,465 Dead Voters, 481,711 Double Registrations Dominate IEBC Register

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has listed several anomalies on the voter register discovered during an audit by the KPMG.

According to IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati, the preliminary audit report from KPMG shows that the register has 246,465 deceased voters, 481,711 duplicate records, and 226,143 voters registered with IDs that don’t validly belong to them.

Moreover, there was a total of 164,269 registrations with voter records with invalid identification documents (IDs and Passports).

IEBC CEO Marjan H. Marjan further said that the Communication Authority of Kenya report indicates that 1,111 polling stations lack a 3G network

The commission has however stated that it is in the process of finalizing the data to map out the stations affected.

At the same time, the Disputes Resolution Committee has received 160 disputes after the Registration of candidates, which ended on Tuesday 7th June 2022 and it will begin hearings on 10th June 2022 for 10 days at Milimani Law Court.

Chebukati said the register will be certified on or before June 20 after the commission receives the final audit from KPMG on June 16. The commission will thereafter have a stakeholder engagement on June 17.

The commission must address all these issues before certifying the register for publication on 20th June 2022.

This came only a few days after two presidential candidates, sought to have the commission make public the audit of the voter registers among other issues.

The Commission has approved only four out of the 50 presidential candidates so far to run in the upcoming elections in August 2022.
