The government has initiated the crackdown on retailers hoarding subsidized flour in anticipation of better prices. Crops Development and agricultural Research PS Francis Owino termed the shortage that is being witnessed across the country as artificial, while calling for immediate arrest for any trade found hoarding the most-sought commodity.

“We are going to engage all government machinery to ensure that all traders hoarding the subsidized maize flour are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

The government has paid 256.7 million shillings to 122 millers in a move to ensure the price of the flour drop to 100 shillings. In a bid to ensure all Kenyans access the commodity, the government has dispatched teams across the country to scrutinize the trade and capture unscrupulous traders. Owino called upon Kenyans to report anyone selling subsidized maize flour above 100 shillings.

The PS had earlier urged Kenyans not to panic, as the country has enough stock of maize in its stores. he attributed the shortage of the shortage in Supermarkets to unfriendly credits given to the millers

“Supermarkets don’t buy maize flour in cash. They are supplied to sell and pay after 45 days. Therefore, millers are finding it difficult to supply the subsidized maize flour to them,” Owino said.

The prices of the flour are expected to be reviewed after four weeks and are likely to stabilize following the onset of maize harvesting which will increase the country’s stock. At the same time, the country is expecting the first consignment of maize from Outside the East African Community two months after the government introduced a waiver on the import duty of the commodity.

In a gazette notice dated Friday, May 20, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani said the maize will be imported to Kenya on or before August 6th, 2022.

According to Yattani, each consignment arriving in the country will have to comply with requirements such as having a moisture content not exceeding 13.5 percent as provided under the laws of Kenya. similarly, the aflatoxin levels shall not exceed ten parts per billion (ppb) as per the Kenyan standards.
