Ruto Says 7 Million Are Out Of CRB, But The Blacklisted Say No

BY Juma · July 3, 2023 09:07 am

President William Ruto, on Sunday, said that the government had removed at least 7 million Kenyans from the Credit Review Bureau (CRB). Of course, the mainstream media, as it is their norm, have flushed the headlines without even confirming the numbers.

The President has been making conflicting statements about the number of Kenyans who are blacklisted on the CRB. Although it is not in his place to be telling us the numbers, he has insisted on being wrong, other than asking those in charge to give him the correct numbers.

The number of Kenyans listed on the CRB has been conflicting. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) places the numbers at least 4.5 million while Metropol, a Credit Bureau puts it at 6 million. In 2022, the CBK indicated that a third of borrowers in Kenya had been blacklisted.

The number might be higher though, given that most Kenyans are blacklisted by mobile lenders. In 2022, at least 500,000 Kenyans had been blacklisted by Credit Reviews for borrowing less than 200 shillings from mobile lenders.

Most Kenyans who have confirmed their blacklisted status have disputed President William Ruto’s announcement that 7 million of them are now off the hook. The question still remains, who is feeding the President with wrong numbers so that he appears as a liar?

Here is how to check if you are blacklisted by the CRB:

The first step is to access the Metropol website or download the Metropol Crystobol app or dial *433#.

To Register with Metropol

  1. The first step is to Pay 50 shillings as registration fees through 220388 as your Pay Bill number
  2. Enter your ID number as the account number.
  3. You will get an SMS with your unique code details, a reference number, and a link.
  4. Dial *433# and enter your PIN, and you will receive your details via the SMS

You will then proceed to get several services that are offered by the company charged at a fee for instance credit Score at 150 shillings, Credit Report at 250 shillings, and the Clearance Certificate at 2200 shillings.
