MSEA Partners With Private Sector To Boost Cold Storage For Small Farmers

Small-scale farmers in Kenya are set to benefit from improved cold storage facilities thanks to a new partnership between the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) and private sector players.

MSEA has teamed up with the Kenya Development Corporation (KDC), Africa Mega Agricorp, and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) to enhance cold storage infrastructure in Meru, Kisii, and Nyandarua counties. This initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access for farmers.

Addressing a Critical Challenge

Many small-scale farmers suffer losses due to inadequate storage, often forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices. MSEA CEO Henry Rithaa emphasized that these new cold storage solutions will help farmers store their crops longer, giving them the flexibility to sell at better prices.

The project will also leverage technology and aggregation centers, helping farmers organize their produce and connect with local and international markets.

Key Industry Support

KDC is providing financial backing, including a KSh 2 billion credit support program for SMEs in partnership with India’s Exim Bank and KCB.

Africa Mega Agricorp CEO Samuel Mutisya highlighted how the company will use its global trade networks, such as in Dubai, to secure better market opportunities for farmers.

KCB will develop tailored financial products to support the operationalization of the storage facilities.

A Boost for Agribusiness and Youth

MSEA is also introducing NYOTA, a five-year youth grant program aimed at promoting agribusiness. Additionally, the government is covering 70% of the cost for small-scale manufacturers to acquire processing equipment, further strengthening the agricultural value chain.

This partnership marks a major step in building a sustainable agricultural ecosystem where farmers, investors, and financial institutions collaborate to enhance productivity and economic growth.
