60 people were on Tuesday 19th November, allocated houses under the government’s affordable housing program, otherwise known as BomaYangu, for which Kenyans have already contributed at least 80 million shillings.

The 60 Kenyans had reportedly paid the required 12.5 percent of the total worth of units and are waiting for the ballot based system of allocation that will determine whether they will get the units purchased.

The units purchased in Ngara comprises of 228 houses with one, two and three bedrooms as the government had promised earlier.

The project is undertaken by a Chinese contractor who is overseeing the 1370 unit worth five million shillings in Ngara.

Principal Secretary (PS) for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga confirmed the completion of the first batch of 228 houses, saying that he already has the completion certificate and that once the transfer mechanisms are complete for sale, the houses will then be handed over to their rightful owners.

He attributed the success of the completion of the Ngara unit batch to Kenyans, who he said had been contributing faithfully towards the affordable housing plan.

Mr. Hinga added that as at now, purchasers can still not be given the keys and titles as the remaining balance of 87.5 percent will be financed by a financer who will in turn charge a fee against the house title.

The PS during his speech at the French Embassy during a seminar bringing together Kenyan and French companies and other organizations, urged Kenyans to register with the Bomayangu housing fund to be eligible for a lifetime of affordable housing.

He said that already, 270,000 Kenyans are registered and that 14,800 Kenyans have been making contributions, some contributing even as little as 300 shillings
