DPP, EACC Donate KSH. 2BN Recovered To Fight Against COVID-19

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has donated 2 billion shillings recovered from graft cases in Kenya to the COVID-19 Emergency Response fund.
DPP Haji and the EACC boss Twalib Mbarak have handed over a dummy cheque showing that a transaction of 2 billion shillings will take place to help Kenyans in the combat against the spread of Coronavirus.
DPP Noordin Haji and EACC boss Twalib Mbarak have issued the cheque to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani and noted that the funds were part of the recovered proceeds of crime such as corruption and money laundering.
Haji has also said that the prosecution fund established in 2018 had so far netted 2.9 billion shillings a part of which the 2 billion shillings has been presented to the Treasury CS Ukur Yatani to fund the fight against COVID-19.
“We have various institutions dealing with corruption. A lot more money is out there but because cases are not complete, we can’t use it. We have to wait for the cases to be heard and determined,” DPP Haji said.
EACC boss Twalib Mbarak said the money was a product of plea bargaining adding, “there are some cases ongoing, we can’t use the money because of pending appeals. But we are confident we will recover this money.”
Twalib noted that the fight against corruption was still on and strong and expressed confidence on the fruits it was bearing.
Twalib and DPP Haji’s move comes a day after President Uhuru noted that the war against corruption was still ongoing even as the country combated the current COVID-19 spread.
President Uhuru yesterday had revealed that state agencies mandated with fighting corruption and recovering assets had made significant recoveries.
“In that regard, as we scale up our interventions against the current health pandemic, I direct the National Treasury to utilize the 2 Billion shillings of already recovered corruption proceeds to support the most vulnerable members of our society, especially the needy in our urban areas. Our fight in this area continues,” Twalib said.
