The world woke up to Dirty Royalty Laundry we least expected to be part of, after an Oprah Winfrey interview with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle.
This interview did not only highlight the plight of the two as members of the Royal family but also gave us a glimpse of The Royal Monarch as an Administration. Safe to say that we have a slight idea of the order of things at Buckingham Palace.
Meghan Markle narrated her ordeal and with the intensity in her voice and emotion, you can clearly tell this is a woman carrying so much pain and let down yet manages to be graceful and cover it with a smile. Most Britons do not seem to share the same sentiments as they claim she knew what she was getting herself into and is doing what she does best, being an actress.
The Prince’s show in disappointment with the people he held with high regard as the family is also very much visible from the interview. He not only expresses heartbreak and shares in his wife’s predicament but also points out wanting to work out his relationship with his father, Prince Charles. We see nothing but a committed, loving, and protective husband and father.

Systemic Racism and Mental Health were some of the issues highlighted alongside other intense issues discussed in the interview. This is not new if you have been around for a long to know how things in the world are run. The mere fact that a royal family member was worried about how the Royal BABY’s skin color would turn out still has most of us over our heads! This is not only heartbreaking to hear for any person of color but also worrying. This is not only limited to the royal family but also interracial and intertribal/interethnic couples can easily relate to this on a daily basis.
Most comments on Social Media that were spiteful towards the couple especially targeting Meghan Markle were a clear indication of where we stand on how we treat victims of racism and those that come out to share their struggle with mental health. We urge victims to be brave and speak out but the moment they do, we doubt their ordeals and shame them. This behavior does not make any progress towards addressing these issues, instead, we make it difficult for people to come out and seek help.
This is a call for us to strive to be and want better, just because something does not directly affect you or you have not experienced discrimination, does not mean it is not happening, and discrediting others for coming out is bottom of the barrel character. Being silent on these issues also does not make them go away!
