KEY POINTS

In 2023, Usawa Agenda conducted a foundational literacy and numeracy assessment that involved visiting over 39,000 households where we assessed over 44000 children and 1973 primary schools spread across all 47 counties in Kenya.

Usawa Agenda is a civil society organization registered in Kenya with a mission to promote systems change for education justice for all through research, innovation, and evidence-based stakeholder engagement.

In 2023, Usawa Agenda conducted a foundational literacy and numeracy assessment that involved visiting over 39,000 households where we assessed over 44000 children and 1973 primary schools spread across all 47 counties in Kenya.

Standardized tests and participatory methodologies were used to gather information from pupils, teachers, and parents. Usawa has now finalized the analysis of the data and will be releasing the Report to stakeholders at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

You can be part of the launch of this report by registering through a Zoom link on https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_b-QO2-OiRvOERp11owtZUw#/registration. You can ask your questions and see data from the report.

As we gear towards releasing the report on Thursday, February 29, let us look back at how the numbers were in 2021. In 2021, only 2 in 5 grade 4 learners met expectations in reading grade 3 appropriate text. Has anything changed in the last two years?

At the same time, in 2021, Marsabit County had the highest percentage of 6-16-year-old children out of school accounting for more than three times the national average, do we expect the same results again in 2023? Or there’s an improvement?

While still at it, are we achieving gender equality in school leadership in 2023 or is it still the same as in 2021 where 8 in 10 BOM chairpersons were men and 7 in 10 school heads were men but 6 in 10 teachers were women?

“Standardized tests and participatory methodologies were used to gather information from pupils, teachers, and parents. We have finalized the data analysis and will release the findings to stakeholders at KICD on February 29, 2024,” said Usawa in a statement.
